The area around Scottsboro, in northeast Alabama, is home to more than 1500 charted caves. Many caving enthusiasts come to explore the caves in the area. Sequoyah Caverns in nearby Valley Head, Alabama, is a popular stop for visitors because it offers relatively easy access to a cave system containing beautiful formations.

Sequoyah Caverns is a private attraction owned by the Jones family, descendants of the original Ellis family that acquired the land in 1841. The Ellis family farmed the land growing corn, oats, and cotton and raising livestock. Their direct descendants still live on the property and lead tours through the cave. Visitors will enjoy the interesting and beautiful cave formations, reflecting pools, and fascinating passageways. Daily guided tours are given every hour. The Looking Glass Tour is a .5 mile walk that takes 45 minutes. The path is well lit and not too steep. Visitors may be able to view a rare species of bats that live in the cave. The Wild Cave Adventure is a popular group tour that takes visitors to parts of the cave that only a few people get to visit. Participants may expect to squeeze through tighter spots and get down and dirty. It is available for groups of 5 or more, and reservations are required. There is also an overnight tour for Scouting and youth groups. The temperature inside Sequoyah Caverns is approximately 60 degrees year round.

There is plenty to do on the property following the cave tour. Visitors may view the 160 year old Ellis homestead cabin and see what rural life was like in the 1800s. They may watch craftspeople demonstrate crafts from the time period, see grazing goats and sheep, and watch white fallow deer. Families may pan for precious gems the way it was done a century ago. For a spectacular view, take a hike up to Lookout Point. Visitors may feed the ducks or fish in the one acre pond, which is stocked with bass and catfish. A picnic area is also available.

Sequoyah Caverns is located off County Road 371 in Valley Head, Alabama, just a short drive east of Scottsboro. They are open seasonally from March-October and December 21-January 1. The hours Monday through Saturday are from 8:30am to 5:00pm. They are closed on Sunday. Admission is charged for ages 4 through adults. Children under age 4 are free. Group rates are available. Sequoyah Caverns offers something fun for the whole family and is well worth a stop when visiting the northeast Alabama area.
